On Greenland

Will he or won't he? On the one hand, invading an ally is extreme, even for Trump. Part of me doubts even he can go that far.

On the other hand, is there an off ramp he would be willing to take? Venezuela was all about oil. If Maduro had struck a deal on oil he'd still be president. (The deal might have had to let the US basically plunder the country, so it might not have been a good one, but it was possible.) It's hard to see a similar off ramp in Greenland. A deal for minerals? That's an option now, American companies could move in any time they want. A deal for security? Again, we already have the right to set up military bases and coordinate defense.

Why does Trump want Greenland? I think it's one simple reason: he wants the historical honor of expanding the US. He wants to get Greenland so he can say he got Greenland. He probably wants to rename it Trumpland. I can hear them, now: "Greenland is a stupid name. There's nothing green on it. It's more ice than Iceland."
